The vineyards of the Nigl family extend from Senftenberg to Krems. The narrow valley along the Krems river is one of the cooler winegrowing regions of Austria. But that is exactly what makes it so special and, from our point of view, optimal for producing high-quality wines. Characterised by the weathered primary rock soils and the microclimate of the Krems Valley, our wines receive their unmistakable taste. Terroir notes in a variety of forms are constantly recognized and enjoyed as stylistic elements of Veltliners and Rieslings: each one of high quality and at the same time individual, a single piece crafted by hand, so to speak.
SENFTENBERG, First location
Hochäcker
The steep terraces which are separated only by a wall from the Pellingen vineyard, form with their mica schist soil the optimal condition for the cultivation of Riesling. This combination gives the Riesling the dark cool mineral characteristic, as well as the typical taste of vineyard peach, a lot of substance and a long life. The Riesling Privat comes from this location.

With a bedrock of mica schist, 35 - 45-year-old vineyards grow here. This steep terrace location in Senftenberg is classified as a “Erste Lage” (First Location) according to the criteria of the Traditional Austrian Wineries. These grapes are the basis for our Grüner Veltliner Privat.

Goldberg
An amphibolite cone protrudes to the surface at Rehberg, almost like a "geological eye", which gives the Riesling planted here a much cooler aroma and more crystalline freshness than in the surrounding locations of the valley. We want to focus further on this special feature and thereby demonstrate what terroir means and how it affects the taste.

This location at Rehberg has another special feature: an approximately one to one-and-a-half-meter thick layer of loess that was deposited on an amphibolite substratum. This is how the cool minerality of the subsoil matches with the substance of the loess soil. The Grüner Veltliner here benefits beyond all measure from the complexity of this very special combination.

The sheltered, south-east facing vineyard situated below the historic church of Senftenberg, rests on a bedrock of mica schist.
The protected location and the soil give the Grüner Veltliner planted here its typical gooseberry-quince aroma and the abundance of minerals as is hardly possible in any other location.
